Getting around
How do I get to the hotel and the courses?
Airport transfers and transport to the courses are not included in our packages. Transfers can be arranged on request, but most golfers hire a car at Porto Airport. Central Porto is about 20 to 25 minutes from the airport, and Vidago about 1 hour 30 minutes. From the city, Oporto Golf Club is about 30 minutes, Estela about 40 minutes, Amarante about 50 minutes, Ponte de Lima about 1 hour and Vidago about 1 hour 30 minutes. Portuguese motorways have tolls.

When is the best time for golf in Porto?
Spring, from March to June, and autumn, from September to November, usually give the best mix of mild temperatures and course condition. July and August are the warmest months and the busiest in the city. Winter golf is possible, but northern Portugal has an Atlantic climate and is noticeably wetter and cooler than the Algarve between November and February, and the coastal links courses can be windy at any time of year.

Should I stay in Porto city or at Vidago?
Staying in Porto puts you within about 30 to 50 minutes of Oporto Golf Club, Estela and Amarante, with Ponte de Lima about an hour away and the city’s restaurants, port lodges and riverside on your doorstep. We use Pestana Vintage Porto on the Ribeira, Turim Oporto on Praça da Trindade and NH Collection Porto Batalha. Vidago Palace, about 1 hour 30 minutes inland, suits golfers who want a quieter resort stay with a course next to the hotel, a thermal spa and the option of unlimited golf.

Which golf courses are included?
You can choose from Oporto Golf Club, Estela, Amarante, Axis Ponte de Lima and Vidago Palace. Vidago packages include rounds on the Vidago course, with the other courses added on 5-night and 7-night stays.

Is Oporto Golf Club really the oldest in Portugal?
Yes. It was founded by British residents of Porto in 1890 and is the oldest golf club in Portugal. The Skeffington Cup has been played there every year since 1891.
Do I need a handicap certificate?
Yes. Please bring a valid handicap certificate from your home club. Oporto Golf Club sets a maximum handicap of 28 for men and 36 for women.
