Sir Henry Cotton
The Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course at Penina opened in 1966 as the first 18-hole course in the Algarve. Cotton, three times Open Champion, built it on flat former rice fields. Streams, ditches and lakes come into play on many holes, and the raised greens have subtle slopes. At 6,273 metres from the white tees and par 73, it is a serious test, although the flat ground makes it an easy walk.
The course has hosted the Portuguese Open ten times and was renovated in 2004 and 2005. It sits in the grounds of the Penina Hotel & Golf Resort, just off the N125 between Portimão and Alvor. The resort also has a 9-hole Resort Course, a large driving range and a pro shop. Soft spikes are compulsory and there is a dress code: no T-shirts, jeans or tennis shoes.
